The 2020 Mazda CX-30 lives up the Mazda reputation for excellent handling and drivability. The 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder has more than enough power to accelerate strong and smooth from a complete stop or on the highway. This is helped by the unbeatable six-speed automatic transmission, that upshifts and downshifts at the perfect times. The 2020 HR-V doesn’t even come close. The 1.8-liter four-cylinder is unresponsive, underpowered, and underwhelming. While many people prefer the CVT, the one in the 2020 HR-V isn’t going to win anyone over. It spends a lot of time hunting for the right gearing ratio, resulting in lots of engine noise and lackluster power output. Getting up to speed in the HR-V is a chore, especially on a highway environment.
The 2020 Mazda CX-30 feels like a vehicle twice its price on the inside. When fully decked out at the Premium trim, the CX-30 looks, sounds, and feels more like a European luxury car than an affordable Japanese import. With the full-leather upholstery, 12-speaker Bose audio system, minimalist control layout, and heads-up display, it’s hard to imagine how it can cost less than $30,000. The 2020 HR-V just can't compare. Yes, it also has leather upholstery, but that’s about all it matches with the CX-30. The interior design is uninspiring, bordering on bland. It also lacks many of the small touches that add up the refinement the Mazda CX-30 has.
