Alongside Toyota and Honda, Mazda has been taking over the US automobile market, yet another Japanese company known for their stylish, reliable, and well-performing vehicles. Mazda owners know how great a Mazda vehicle can be. The 2019 Mazda6 is no exception. Boasting possibly the best driving experience in its class, coupled with comfort and style, the Mazda6 is a surefire good investment.
Today, we put the base model Mazda6 Sport head-to-head against the recently ‘refreshed’ base model 2019 Chevy Malibu L to see if the Mazda young gun can hold its own against the vetted Chevy Malibu.

2019 Mazda6 Performance and Driving
The Mazda6 has a full liter more of displacement over the Malibu, lending to the almost 30-extra horsepower. The 6-speed shiftable automatic that comes standard on the Mazda6 allows for the smooth and almost instantaneous transfer of that horsepower and torque to the road, making it responsive and nimble. The Malibu, on the other hand, has an unrefined continuous-variable transmission that leaves a lot to be desired when the accelerator is depressed any significant amount. When trying to pass or merge onto the highway, ‘putting the pedal to the metal’ causes the transmission to lag and then abruptly speed up. It feels a bit like the engine is stalling or flooding out for a fraction of a second before finally responding.
2019 Mazda6 Interior and Comfort
The interior of the Malibu feels dated and plastic-y, particularly in the rear, while also lacking industry standard features like Bluetooth® and parking assistance on the base model. The Mazda6 interior feels stylish and well put together, avoiding the squeaking and rattling common in the Malibu. Drive noise is compounded upon by the loud tire noise of the Malibu, especially at high speeds. The Mazda6 cuts down on all those little things that start to grate on you over long drives, even including features like a knee cushion on the side of the transmission housing to keep you comfortable.
