Confident Performance

Despite the smaller engine, the CX-9 makes up for the relative lack of power with outrageous torque. This means that the CX-9 is quicker off the line than the Highlander, doing 0-60 mph in 7.3 seconds to the 7.9 seconds of the Highlander. The CX-9 truly outperforms its competition in handling, steering, and braking. All of which are categories where the Highlander is solidly average. The CX-9 brakes from 60-0 mph in just 115 feet; that’s a shorter distance than most sedans. Steering is stellar, maintaining a fantastic driver-vehicle-road connection. Handling is nimble and sure-footed, even in demanding conditions.

Superior Technology

Toyota has been noted for its focus on safety features as opposed to keeping up with consumer technology. The 2019 Highlander is no different. It feels outdated by a year or two, at least. The lack of Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto are keenly felt, considering both are standard on the CX-9. The CX-9 doesn’t sacrifice safety features either, going blow-for-blow with the Highlander. We found that CX-9 safety features were just as—if not more—fine-tuned than those in Highlander. The CX-9 features also appear to be less prone to false alarms.
