Here at Hall Mazda near Milwaukee, you may notice that some of our vehicle have Nappa leather upholstery. The CX-5 Signature, CX-9 Signature, and Mazda6 Signature come standard with Nappa leather, and the MX-5 Miata Grand Touring has it as an available option. Many people are curious about it.
Specifically, people want to know what Nappa leather upholstery is and how it’s different from a typical leather upholstery. Let’s take a look.
What is Nappa Leather Upholstery?
Simply put, Nappa leather is a premium quality leather that has a better grain and isn’t subjected to the same damaging chemical treatments regular leather is. The result is a leather upholstery that is much softer, smoother, and more natural looking than traditional leather upholstery. The downside is that Nappa leather is less customizable than traditional leather. You won’t see reds or other nonstandard colors. Nappa leather is usually an earthy tone, reflecting the animal it came from.
Why Does Leather Grain Matter?
Nappa leather has what’s called “natural grain” or “full-grain.” They both refer to the same type of leather. It means that the leather has not been altered by corrosive dyes, chemicals, or has had any part of the grain removed. Full-grain leather is the strongest, softest, and most durable leather available. As you may imagine, this makes producing leather products, such as upholstery, more difficult and expensive. Which is why it’s considered premium product. Full-grain leather is also known for getting better as it ages, unlike regular leather upholstery.
