Should I put premium gas in my 2021 Mazda CX-5?

2021 Mazda CX-5: Which Fuel Should You Use?

When it comes to engine performance, the internet can’t seem to decide if premium fuel or regular fuel is better. And there are so many variables that a blanket recommendation should never be trusted. What should be trusted, though, is the manufacturer recommendation.

Here’s what type fuel Mazda recommends for the 2021 Mazda CX-5.

Premium vs Regular Fuel Recommendation

If you have 2021 Mazda CX-5 with a 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G turbo-four, premium fuel is recommended for optimal horsepower and torque, but it is not necessary to function. All 2021 CX-5 models operate safely on regular gas. Trims that come with the turbocharged engine are the Carbon Edition, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, and Signature. With premium fuel, the engine produces 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. On regular fuel, the engine pumps out 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque.

Can I Turn Off AWD for Better Fuel Mileage?

AWD is available on the Sport, Touring, Carbon Edition, and Grand Touring. It is standard on the Grand Touring and Signature trims. If you have a 2021 CX-5 with i-ACTIV AWD, then you can’t turn off AWD…because it turns itself off automatically! With this dynamic AWD system, the 2021 CX-5 uses multiple sensors all over your vehicle to detect micro-slippages. When it does detect one, the i-ACTIV AWD system automatically sends power or brake pressure to the slipping wheel. This way, you never lose traction, and thus, you never lose control. But when it your rear wheels don’t need power, they don’t get any, meaning you always get optimal fuel economy.
