How to get car ready for fall and winter?

Autumn Auto Service Checklist: Get Your Car Ready for Fall and Winter

Fall started last week. Crazy how quickly time goes. And with fall comes all sorts of things to do. Rake up leaves, clean the gutters and downspouts, pressure wash the siding, check the windows and doors, and…make sure your vehicle is ready for the cold weather.

Here’s a checklist to get your car ready for fall and winter.

Check Your Oil

While checking your oil regularly is important all year round, when temperatures start to drop, it’s a little more important than usual. Why is that? Viscosity. During the summer, many vehicles use a higher viscosity oil that is rough on engines in cold weather. In places like Milwaukee, where we spend most of winter at below freezing (and even below zero) temperatures, a low viscosity oil keeps your engine going.

Check Your Tires

When temperatures change, the air pressure in your tires does too. When it’s cold, your tires lose pressure. Make sure they’re at the manufacturer recommended pressure (usually between 32-34 psi). Tread is also incredibly important, especially during the winter months. So, if your tread is getting low, you should consider getting new tires, winter tires being the best option.

Check Your Brakes

Your ABS are very important once ice forms on the roads. If your brakes feel like they’ve been getting soft or less responsive, then you should get them professionally checked. Aside from good tires, strong brakes will keep you safe this fall and winter.

Check Your Heating

This one may be a little less obvious than the other three. Check to see if the heater in your vehicle works before you need it. If you turn it on and there’s any unusual noises or smells, you may need a new blower motor. Similarly, check things like heated seats and heated steering wheels to make sure that they work as well.
