Diesel engines have several advantages: they get great mileage, they’re more durable over time, and they don’t need ignition tune-ups. However, the main reason many consumers are attracted to diesel engines is that they provide far more torque to the driveshaft than gasoline does. This results in increased acceleration, along with higher tow ratings.

The 2019 Mazda CX-9 is an excellent SUV that’s on many shoppers’ short lists. It’s got agile handling and tough performance, an upscale interior, and a long list of safety and technology features. One thing you may be wondering, however, is: does the 2019 Mazda CX-9 offer a diesel engine?

The 2019 Mazda CX-9 does not offer a diesel engine option. Instead, it boasts one engine choice: a gas-powered turbocharged four-cylinder, linked to a six-speed automatic transmission and producing 227 to 250 horsepower.

This engine has been very well-received, but drivers with their heart set on a diesel powerplant can look to the 2019 Mazda CX-5, which offers an optional 2.2-liter turbo diesel engine, producing 168-horsepower and a full 290 pound-feet of torque.

Even though it’s not diesel, the engine in the 2019 Mazda CX-9 has gotten a fair share of acclaim. It’s known for its spicy performance. Acceleration is brisk, and you’d be forgiven for believing you’re driving a V6 rather than a four-cylinder.

Aside from the above-mentioned horsepower figures (which are determined by the grade of gasoline used inside), the 2019 CX-9 gets an excellent fuel-economy of 22 miles-per-gallon in the city and 28 on the highway; these are some of the best ratings in the class. When equipped with all-wheel drive, the numbers drop slightly to 20 mpg in the city and 26 on the highway.

Towing capacity of the 2019 Mazda CX-9 is up to 3,500 pounds, when properly equipped.

This diesel powerplant gets an estimated 27 miles-per-gallon in the city and 30 on the highway. It produces 168 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque.

With the diesel engine equipped, towing capacity of the 2019 CX-5 jumps up to 3,500 pounds.
