THe Story of Hall Mazda

The Hall name is by no means new on the automotive block. We always remain innovative and cutting edge, but we have humble beginnings that extend all the way back to the early 1900’s. A.C. Hall may have been the first in the Hall family to express an interest in the automotive world, but he definitely wasn’t the last. He put himself to work at the Jennings Auto Sales Company in Springfield, Illinois. He quickly developed a knack for selling cars. He loved working with people every day and he was good at it. Soon he had two Ford dealerships of his own just outside of Springfield, but these little dealerships weren’t big enough for his dreams. He moved to somewhat greener pastures up in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he formed the Hall-Herschbach partnership.

A.C. Hall soon sold his interest in the business, as his wife found the winters too cold. A.C. Hall still had big plans though. He was in talks with Henry Ford himself to open a Ford tractor distributorship two states south. After traveling to Detroit to hash out the plans directly, the two business minds, Hall and Ford, quickly clashed. A long argument had Henry Ford canceling his tractor distributorship plans and A.C. Hall opening a Chevrolet dealership in Milwaukee. Hall Chevrolet quickly grew to be an iconic dealer in Southeast Wisconsin. A.C. Hall didn’t just make a strong business, with his sons he made a family business as Bob Hall, Latham Hall, and later Andy Hall, Bob’s son, took the reins of the company, running it from 1926 to 2010.

In the 1980’s, Andy was looking to diversify the business. Chevrolet wasn’t as strong as it once was, and great new cars were coming out of Europe and Japan. He acquired two franchises from Jefford’s Motor Company, Mazda and Volkswagen, and he had a new facility built in 1989 to house them. This state-of-the-art facility was even rebuilt and expanded in 2010.

In 2003, Hall Automotive officially made the transition from a three-generation business to a four-generation business as Charlie Hall, Andy’s son, came to work here full-time. He had grown up in this dealership. What started with cutting grass and washing cars eventually grew into selling cars. Currently Andy Hall, Charlie Hall, and Charlie Hall’s brother in law, Michael Delmore, operate the business. Some could say it all started from an argument, but where it really began was with A.C. Hall’s passion for doing right by his customers and giving them the best car buying experience they could ever ask for.
